Frequently Asked Questions

How large do Betta fish grow?

2 to 3 inches in length. The largest species of Betta can get up to 5 inches long!

How large of an aquarium do Betta fish need?

The minimum suggested size for a Betta fish bowl would be 0.5 to .75 gallons. A bowl or aquarium containing 2 to 5 gallons of water is ideal for your Betta. We always recommend purchasing the largest habitat for your Betta that you can accommodate.

How often should I clean my Betta’s aquarium?

For small aquariums (under 2 gallons) change no more than 50% of the water once weekly. In larger filtered aquariums, change 25% of the water every 2 to 4 weeks.

Filter vs. no filter?

Betta fish do not require a filter or water movement, but a bowl with no filter will require more frequent maintenance. Using a filter will help maintain good water quality and add oxygen to the water. Check out the Accessories tab for filtration options for your Betta.

Can Betta fish be kept together in the same aquarium?

Two male Bettas should not be kept together in the same aquarium. They are extremely aggressive and territorial. Female Bettas can be kept with other female Bettas in the same tank if large enough. Males Bettas should only be kept with female Bettas for breeding purposes and can be very aggressive to females as well

How long does a Betta fish live?

Betta fish typically live for 3 to 5 years in captivity, but can live up to 7 years.

How many different varieties of Betta are there?

There are over 60 different species of Betta fish. The most common species in captivity is Betta splendens also known as the Siamese Fighting Fish. Betta spendens come in at least 38 varieties of different tail types, scale patterns, and colors.

What is the difference between male and female Betta?

Male Bettas have brighter coloring and longer fins than females. Female Bettas also have a tiny white tube visible near their vent that is absent in males.

What do I do for the Betta when I go on vacation?

If it is a short vacation, a healthy Betta fish can easily go 3-4 days without eating once in a while. For a longer vacation, there are small vacation feeder blocks for Betta fish on the market that can feed fish for up to 10-14 days, or an automatic/timer feeder can be used. Underfeeding the fish while you are on vacation is much safer than overfeeding.

Do Betta fish need a heater?

Betta fish do well in water temperatures between 75 and 80 degrees F, and thrive from 76 to 78 degrees F. If the room temperature gets below this range a heater may be needed to maintain the proper temperature range and stability. Check out the Accessories tab for heater options for your Betta.

What do Betta fish eat?

A well-balanced Betta pellet diet, and supplement with freeze dried bloodworms or frozen foods for variety. Feed sparingly, 2-5 pellets once daily, and no more than fish can eat in 1 to 2 minutes.
